Taipei 101 enjoyed the top position as the highest skyscraper in the world for more than 5 years from 2004, till it was surpassed by the Burj Khalifa in 2010. However, it was not only the first skyscraper of the century, but also the first in the entire millennium. The skyscraper was the first structure to be higher than half kilo meter.
The skyscraper, as the name suggests, is a 101 floor building in Taipei in Taiwan. Its exact location is the Xinyi district. The landmark skyscraper was designed by C Y Lee & Partners, and has been an iconic structure that has acted as a symbol of the modern day Taiwan. The tower was presented with the Emporis Skyscraper award in 2004.
Taipei 101 also has five floors below ground. Taipei was designed so as to symbolize the growth of technology, the development of Taiwan, as well as the Asian tradition. The style can be best described as post modernist, with a good deal of elements borrowed from the traditional approach to architecture, as well as giving the whole building a modern treatment.
The tower is earthquake proof as well as typhoon proof. The tower has a multi level shopping center adjoining it that is located at the top, and there are hundreds of stores, dining options and nightclubs.
The Taipei 101 has been featured in international media with fireworks on New Year and on other occasions.
